Setting a Higher Standard
When I was younger, having asthma and being dyslexic certainly did not help my GPA or athletic abilities. However, my father taught me a philosophy for success. I have a belief and I believe in it strongly. It is the philosophy I operate by daily. It is not very complicated but it will change your whole attitude about life, problems, people and business.
A Winning Attitude
I think attitude is the most important thing in this world. Attitude is something you control. You were given a lot of wonderful powers. You have the power to think, to love, to create, to imagine and to plan. The greatest power you have is to choose. Wherever you are today, you are there because you choose to be there.
We also choose our attitudes. Too many times we let what happens to us control us. After reading this, you are going to have positive attitude to some degree and then you're going to have negative things happen. Only you can choose whether or not it's going to cause you to stay positive or fall back into a negative attitude.
A Positive Self-Image
We need to have faith and belief in what we are doing. You cannot be a leader, a manager, a teacher or a coach and be effective if you don't have a good self-image.
We're going to make mistakes and often time, we're going to make many – but let's learn and let's benefit from them. Do what's right and avoid what's wrong. It's that simple. Sometimes we blame everybody and everything around us to the point where it gets ridiculous. We have to remember that we are in charge of our own life by the choices we make.
We also can't go through life feeling guilty. No one is free of mistakes. That's life. All we can do is say, “I'm sorry,” try to make amends and move on. Don't go through life with an albatross around your neck. Happiness is nothing more than having a poor memory. Think about it, your memories of your childhood friends or a vacation are made up of the happy and good times. There were negative things but you have forgotten those. If you can't remember what bad or negative things happened yesterday, you'll feel pretty happy today!
Set a Higher Standards
Whatever you do, do it to the best of you ability. The higher you set the standard for yourself, the higher the self-image. The worst disservice we can do as a leader, manager, or coach is to say to those around us, “I don't think you are capable of doing very much – so I'm going to lower the standard.”
There are only two types of leaders: those who believe in themselves and lift others up and those with a poor-self image who pull everyone down. If you’re in a leadership role, don't worry about being popular – worry about raising the self-image and productivity of the people around you.
If you're in the habit of reaching out and helping others, your self-image is going to grow and that's all that business is about – helping people get what they want. As the self-image of those around you grows, productivity grows.
